The Global South Power Partnership Development Forum opens in Hong Kong, China, on June 26.

The forum, themed "Empowering the Global South, Co-creating an Energy Future", brought together representatives from government departments, energy and power companies, international organizations, industry associations, financial institutions, universities and media from more than 20 countries and regions.

Focusing on the core topics such as universal access to electricity, green and low-carbon transitions, and mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, participants engaged in in-depth discussions in a bid to chart a path for high-quality energy and electric power development in the Global South.

As one of China's two major power grids, CSG is committed to actively practicing the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity, and remains steadfast in its role as a promoter of mutual assistance in energy and power security among countries and regions of the Global South, a contributor to green transitions and a practitioner of modern governance.

The company has established 17 high-voltage cross-border power transmission lines with Lancang-Mekong countries, with over 84 billion kWh of electricity transmitted, more than 90 percent of which is clean energy. The Kimal-Lo Aguirre high-voltage direct current transmission project in Chile, in which CSG participated as a constructor, reduces carbon emissions by nearly 20 million metric tons annually. Meanwhile, the power distribution project of Pluz Energía Perú S.A.A., in which CSG holds a controlling stake and serves as the operator, has achieved the highest power supply reliability in Peru.

At the forum, CSG unveiled the "CSG Treasures", showcasing the technologies, products, and services that are available to be shared in fields such as ultra-high-voltage DC transmission, submarine cable transmission, pumped storage, and new energy storage.

The Initiative for Cooperation and Development among Global South Utilities was unveiled at the forum, calling on them to adhere to openness, inclusiveness, pragmatic cooperation and mutual benefit to jointly build power infrastructure, promote the application of low-carbon technologies, foster green investment cooperation, and share power knowledge achievements. It encourages the companies to work together to build a safe, reliable, green, low-carbon, flexible, and intelligent energy and power system, injecting green momentum into the modernization of the countries and regions of the Global South.

Two roundtable discussions were held in the afternoon. The first dialogue, focused on "Technology for All and Resource Localization: Practical Approaches to Addressing Electricity Access Gaps in the Global South", was moderated by Liu Xiaowei, Asia director and senior advisor to the secretary general of the World Energy Council (WEC).

Eight participants from international organizations and power companies in China, Laos, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil and South Africa had in-depth discussions on the challenges and success stories of technology transfer, financial empowerment, technological innovation, and industrial collaboration, exploring feasible paths to enhance universal accessibility to electricity services in the countries and regions of the Global South.

The second dialogue, focused on "Outlook for the Low-carbon Power Transition and Pragmatic Cooperation in the Global South", was moderated by Liu Hongpeng, director of the Energy Division at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP).

Eight speakers from industry associations and power companies in China, Singapore, Egypt, and Chile discussed how power systems can achieve clean energy development, grid upgrades, digital empowerment, green consumption mechanism, and cross-regional collaborative development in the low-carbon transition phase, seeking pragmatic cooperation opportunities in the green and low-carbon fields.

As an important part of the forum, the 10th Power Utility Summit was held simultaneously. The meeting, themed "From Connectivity to a Common Market: Creating a New Decade of Power Cooperation with Lancang-Mekong Region", gathered representatives from power enterprises and industry experts from the Lancang-Mekong countries.

While summarizing the achievements of regional power cooperation, they engaged in in-depth exchanges on topics such as green energy transitions, interconnection and upgrades of cross-border grids, and construction of a common market for electric power in the region, fostering consensus for the development of power cooperation within the Lancang-Mekong region from interconnection to a common market.

The summit also released the Research Outcome on Corporate Governance of Power Utilities in the Lancang-Mekong Region, led by the Mekong Institute. The handover ceremony for the host of the next summit was held. The 11th Power Utility Summit will be hosted by Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC), the national power utility of Cambodia.

Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines of the Global South Power Partnership Development Forum were held at CSG International (HK), where representatives from power enterprises in Central Asia, West Asia, Latin America, and Africa conducted one-on-one in-depth talks.

The discussions focused on aligning with the actual energy development and transition needs of each country, precisely targeting where cooperation may grow. They engaged in pragmatic consultations on key areas such as grid upgrades, application of new energy storage technology, and power digital transformation.

On June 27, the forum participants visited the Lianhuashan Super-charging Station in Shenzhen, Chunhui Substation, and Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Station to conduct technical tours and gain firsthand insights into the achievements of CSG in the construction of the new power system, digital grid development, super-charging facilities, and pumped storage technology applications.

Participants said that the forum provided an important platform for high-level dialogue and pragmatic cooperation for the countries and regions of the Global South in electrical power sector, and further enhanced mutual trust and consensus in the energy and power fields among them, injecting fresh momentum into the efforts to promote the energy transition and sustainable development in the region.
