Shuangbai houses 625 green peacocks, making up 50% of national total

195 green peacocks were newly recorded in the 2025 monitoring of the wild green peacock population in Shuangbai county, central Yunnan’s Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture.
The total number of Shuangbai green peacocks has now reached 625, accounting for over half of the national population. This impressive data is a vivid testament to the county's years of dedication in ecological protection and biodiversity conservation.

As the geographical center of Yunnan province, Shuangbai serves as an important ecological barrier at the source of the Red River that flows into Vietnam. The county has a forest area of 4.7842 million mu (666.6 square meters), with a forest coverage of 69.14%.
The region boasts 5,486 species of higher plants, 110 species of mammals, 310 birds, and 100 amphibians and reptiles. Its complete ecosystem and unique natural conditions provide an excellent habitat for the green peacock.
