As an item on China’s list of national intangible cultural heritage, Jianchuan woodcarving originated in the period of Nanzhao Kingdom and played a crucial role in the glorious history of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road.

The beauty of woodcarving derives primarily from its highly sophisticated patterns and fine craftsmanship. The Bai people believe that both wood and chisel are living beings that should be treated and taken care of wholeheartedly.
