Yunnan has five major areas for growing coffee
Yunnan province has five major areas for coffee production, and they are Pu'er, Baoshan, Dehong, Lincang and Xishuangbanna.

Southwest Yunnan’s Pu'er city is situated in the same latitudinal zone as Colombia, a renowned coffee-planting region worldwide. The city is a most ideal area for coffee-growing in the world. It is hailed as the "paradise of Arabica coffee."
Currently, Pu'er boasts a coffee cultivation area of 679,000 mu (around 45,293 hectares) across the city, with an annual output of 51,300 metric tons. As China's largest coffee-growing region with the highest yield and best quality, Pu'er serves as a coffee production hub and trade center. It is celebrated as the "coffee capital of China."
The primary coffee variety grown in Pu'er is Catimor, known for its mellow flavor. It is rich yet not bitter, with a subtle hint of fruity acidity.

The coffee cultivation history of Baoshan city, southwest Yunnan, began in the mid-1950s when Mr. Liang Jinshan introduced the first coffee seedlings from Southeast Asia. In 1993, Baoshan’s coffea arabica won the Eureka gold award, making it the only Chinese coffee variety to ever receive a world-class gold medal.
Today, the coffee-growing area in Baoshan spans 145,000 mu (around 9666.7 hectares), mostly Typica and Bourbon varieties. Baoshan coffee is renowned for its bold yet smooth flavor, delicate aroma, and absence of harsh bitterness.
The beans are small and similar in size, offering a rich, aromatic and fruity taste.
Dehong's coffee products
In 1914, west Yunnan’s Dehong prefecture introduced Arabica coffee from Myanmar and began cultivating it. Currently, the prefecture has a coffee-growing area of 81,700 mu (5,447 hectares). Locals mostly grow two coffee varieties: Catimor and Typica.
International coffee merchants say Dehong coffee has a highest quality in the world.
Coffee making in Yunnan
Southwest Yunnan’s Lincang city currently boasts 233,700 mu (15,580 hectares) of coffee plantations, recognized as the "demonstration zone for growing Chinese special coffee beans" and the "core production area for Yunnan coffee specialties."
The region mostly grows Catimor and Typica varieties, with its coffee featuring citrus and floral smells.
The Lincang cafes are emerging as sought-after destinations for coffee experiences, coffee tours, cultural innovation, and coffee research.

Coffee from Xishuangbanna is celebrated for its high sweetness, mild acidity, lingering scent, and rich aromas of caramel and nuts.
