Italian tourists impressed by sacrificial site in Pu'er
Italian tourists Dario and Roussel were recently captivated by the Longmoye sacrificial site in Pu'er. “Since we came here, the buffalo heads and the surrounding area are beautiful and amazing,” said Dario.
"Longmoye" is a term from the Wa language, where "Long" means forest and "moye" refers to buffalo heads. Thus, the term means a "holy forest where buffalo heads are hung." Located in the Mengsuo Longtan scenic area of Ximeng Wa autonomous county, southwest Yunnan’s Pu'er city, the forest is just 0.5 kilometer from the county town.
As a site for the primitive religious sacrifices of the Wa people, this place is characterized by the hanging of over 3,000 buffalo skulls. The forest also contains remnants of human head stakes and sacrificial platforms. Regarded as a gathering place for deities and a destination for souls, it embodies the Wa people's animistic nature worship.
