S&SE Asian news officials explore splendid Yunnan in LMAW
As a major event during the ongoing 5th Lancang-Mekong Audiovisual Week (LMAW), the trip to explore “Beautiful China — A Many-Splendored Yunnan Life” took place in central Yunnan’s cities of Kunming and Yuxi from June 17 to 19.
The Yunnan trip was attended by some 40 press officials and media professionals from the Southeast Asian countries of Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand, as well as from the South Asian nations of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
In Kunming, the attendees visited Kunming International Flower Trading Center, Yunnan Baiyao Group Co., Ltd., Yunnan Key Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and other places to know about provincial new developments in flower business, biomedicine and AI. In Yuxi, they stopped at Chengjiang Fossil Site Natural History Museum, Mafang Village and others for a look into the eco-progress and rural revitalization in Yunnan.

When visiting the Yunnan Key Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence at KUST, Kem Gunawadh, secretary of state of Cambodian Ministry of Information, was fascinated by the laboratory’s Yunling multilingual translation system. Then he discussed the system’s information security with the staffs in the laboratory, trying the voice-translation function in person.
"Could I take this translation machine back to Cambodia?" asked Ouk Kampoul, deputy director-general of General Department of Information and Broadcasting, Cambodian Ministry of Information. Ouk Kampoul needs to talk with the Chinese peers in his daily work and life, and he thinks the system’s voice translation will facilitate the communication.

"Visiting the Kunming International Flower Trading Center, I saw an advanced development model of the Yunnan flower industry, where the flower planting, R&D, processing and sales reinforce each other to form a complete and sustainable chain,” said Hissella Kankanamalage Mothilal Hissella, head of International Relations, Sri Lanka Rupavahini (TV) Corporation.
Hissella Kankanamalage noted the advanced online auction and trading system has made flower trade more rapid and transparent, providing a broader market for flower growers. He added Sri Lanka is rich in agricultural and tourist resources and can thus learn from Yunnan's practice.

“In Chengjiang natural museum, I’m impressed by the vivid life-evolution process that was presented by an LED ball screen and the AI somatosensory games,” said Shamim Abdullah Zahedy, associate editor-in-chief of Bangladesh Independent Television.
It was the first time for Shamim to visit Yunnan, and he hoped to cooperate with Yunnan media in shooting documentaries on natural geography, jointly recording the natural beauty and ecological diversity of both sides.
