Tran Toan Thang, head of the International Issues Division under Vietnam Institute for Development Strategies, believes the GMS mechanism is a model of regional cooperation, and Vietnam and Yunnan have achieved remarkable results in diverse cooperative fields.

The eighth Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Summit is going on in Kunming, Yunnan province from Nov. 6 to 7, and Tran said this during a recent interview with YICC, on the occasion of the regional summit.

Mekong countries have always been key trading partners of Yunnan. Statistics at Kunming Customs show Yunnan’s trade with the five Mekong countries reached 78.92 billion yuan in the first three quarters of this year, accounting for 93.7% of the provincial trade with all the ASEAN countries.
