Lijiang, celebrated for its unique Naxi culture and breathtaking natural scenery, holds another distinction that might surprise many: it is renowned as the “Hometown of Football.” This title reflects the city's deep-rooted passion for the sport and its significant contributions to football over the centuries. From ancient traditions to modern professional leagues, Lijiang’s love for football runs through its veins.

A Historical Legacy: From Cuju to Modern Football

The history of football in Lijiang dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1522–1566) during the reign of Emperor Jiajing. Historical records and ancient poems vividly describe the Naxi people’s joyful gatherings around swing games and Cuju—an ancient Chinese ball game that laid the foundation for modern football. This highlights not only the sport’s origins but also its role in the rich tapestry of Naxi cultural traditions.

The War Years: Football as a Bridge of Friendship

During World War II, Lijiang played a pivotal role as part of the Hump air route. The Baisha Flying Tigers Airfield, a key wartime supply line, saw American troops stationed there engaging in friendly football matches with local residents. These games became legendary, epitomized by the saying, “American boots couldn’t beat our bare feet.” These matches were more than just entertainment; they symbolized resilience, camaraderie, and the unyielding spirit of the Lijiang people.

Modern Development: From Grassroots to Glory

Lijiang’s football culture flourished during the 1970s as village and community teams sprouted across the region. Over time, football in Lijiang transitioned from grassroots enthusiasm to a more structured and professional framework.

By the 21st century, Lijiang’s football infrastructure had significantly improved, and youth programs and community tournaments gained momentum. The establishment of clubs such as Lijiang Dongba, Jiayunhao, and Flying Tigers propelled the city onto the national stage.

2016 Victory: Lijiang Flying Tigers achieved a historic milestone by winning the China League Two Championship, becoming the first team in Yunnan’s history to clinch a national title in an official football competition. This victory cemented Lijiang’s status as a powerhouse in Chinese football.
