Global condemnation of Israel’s expanded invasion of Lebanon

Reaction has been coming in from around the world as Israel pushes deeper into Lebanese territory.

Israel expands invasion of Lebanon.

Here is a round-up of the latest:

  • French President Emmanuel Macron said that “nothing justifies” the major escalation under way in Lebanon, and his foreign minister said that France has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the matter.

  • UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called on Israel to halt its military activity in Lebanon, saying its escalation had “eroded space for diplomacy”.

  • Germany’s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, said Israel’s advance was a “cause for serious concern” and called on all parties to halt hostilities.

  • Qatar condemned Israel’s continuing attacks on Lebanon and the expansion of its ground offensive in the south, describing the campaign as a serious escalation and violation of international law.

  • Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, affirmed Cairo’s solidarity with Lebanon in a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. He also called for Israel’s complete withdrawal from all Lebanese territory.
